During the Feb10/26 Nanaimo Regional Hospital District Board meeting, directors were updated on the current status of new Cancer Centre located at the Nanaimo Regional Hospital. With a budget of $328 million, construction is underway and center is expected to open on July 2028.
The new Cancer Centre will include the ability to provide radiation and chemotherapy treatments in Nanaimo eliminating the need for local patients to travel to Victoria for similar care. Some more specialized cancer treatments will still require travel to Vancouver or Victoria.
The presentation also included updates on the Lantzville long term care facility, and capital improvements planned for the aging regional hospital which was originally built in 1963.
The full presentation is available and a link is provided at the end of the article.
I am encouraged to see the open dialogue and sharing of information to help the directors and public gain enhanced understanding of the process involved and progress made to date. With a $3.2 Billion 10 year capital spending budget, it is one thing to impose increasing local tax levies to fund all the healthcare we need and want, it is equally important to ensure healthcare money we fund as property owners goes to the services we feel are most critical. I encourage people who are interested to take the time to review the video.
