Early last year town council passed a motion to delegate coordination of an extreme weather warming shelter to staff using a non profit provider and provincial funds to cover the cost. The goal of the motion was to recognize the need to be proactive rather than reactive when the weather becomes extreme.
Violet Hayes, Executive Director of Island Crisis Society (ICCS) based in Nanaimo confirmed that they have an agreement with the town signed on January 17th 2025 running until March 31 2025, to facilitate the temporary extreme weather shelter at the Christian Fellowship Centre on Village Way. To date (Feb1st) they have been open 4 nights and assisted 9 people.
ICCS confirmed "they haven't had any volunteers yet and are struggling to find the staff to cover the overnight shifts. This will become even more difficult if the cold weather continues. The church has been extremely helpful."
ICCS will be holding their Coldest Night of the Year fundraising event on Feb 22 in Qualicum Beach. ICCS press release states "This event is more than a fundraiser--- it is a chance to come together, take action and show that our community cares. Funds raised in Oceanside will directly support ICCS's Oceanside programs, including outreach, rent subsidies, and life skills for community connection at Orca Place in Parksville."
