It is refreshing to see some push back to the ongoing tax increases imposed by the RDN over the past several years. The RDN Taxpayer Alliance ( RDN TA) is a group of Resident and Neighbourhood Associations who have come together to advocate for tax reform to ensure property tax increases do not out pace the taxpayers ability to pay them. The RDN TA has been actively engaging local residents to enhance awareness and to gain understanding of the "drivers" that contribute to the seemingly never ending increasing property tax assessments.
RDN TA is an informal entirely volunteer group made up of a variety of individuals with diverse perspectives and professional expertise. They examined the RDN budget from a historical perspective along with the projected trajectory of the next five years. Having completed their analysis they are now undertaking an ambitious speakers tour to get their message out to the general population, who for the most part do not have the financial literacy or time to do a deep dive into the RDN budget workings. These presentations are being held at various residents associations throughout the RDN over the next few weeks. Many of these meetings are open to anyone living with RDN boundaries.
The group plans to present as a delegation to the RDN Board meeting scheduled for Dec 9th 2025. This is the meeting when the RDN Board will be approving the 2026 to 2030 budget which was just released to the public on Nov 4th. There appears to be no other opportunity for public input before the RDN meeting of Dec. 9th 2025. On a positive note, it is the RDN's practice to amend the budget sometime in March 2026 to arrive at a final amended budget at that point. Hopefully the input provided will be reflected in the amended final budget document.
As residents in the RDN we should be grateful that volunteer citizens groups are rallying together to address these concerns. Not everyone has the time to get deeply involved however there are things you can do to help moderate the rate of tax increases. You can invest an hour of your time to hear one of their presentations, or you can show your support by signing their electronic petition found on their website. Finally you can attend the Dec. 9th 2025 RDN board meeting to physically show your support. There is no better way to get the RDN board's attention than to show up at a meeting. You don't need to speak.... just show your support by your physical presence.
