Qualicum Beach Airport Discussion Forum scheduled for June 25, 2025

The town of Qualicum Beach has released the agenda for the upcoming committee of the whole meeting titled "Qualicum Beach Airport Discussion Forum". The agenda includes a presentation of the quarterly airport report and will include details on the complaints and inquiries received during the period of January 1 to June 11th as tracked by the airport inquiry tracking system.

Based on the agenda package released, It would appear that the town does not intend to share 2024 year end financial information relative to actual costs at the airport with a comparison to the 2024 budgeted costs. The lack of transparency relative to the actual financial cost of operating and maintaining the airport remains a concern to many residents and failure to include this information in this meeting is a missed opportunity for the town to address these concerns. It is now 6 months after year end, the town has the information so why don't they release it? This failure erodes the trust between the voters of Qualicum Beach in their local government.

The town facilitates these airport meetings twice a year and we all have a role to play.

Town staff need to accurately and impartially report on both the financial impacts and operational issues.

Council needs to continually ask questions to better understand the power the town has as the airport authority to reduce the negative impact on quality of life for our residents and to direct staff with some sense of urgency, to seek improvements to increase the user pay aspects to reduce tax payer costs. Residents of the town need to voice their concerns and continue to engage with the town council for resolution to those concerns.

The meeting is scheduled for 4 pm June 25th and will held in Council Chambers at Town Hall. Plan to attend, as this is your opportunity to listen, ask questions and get answers.
