In this afternoon's media release the Town of Qualicum Beach (TQB) confirmed a conditional agreement has been reached to purchase the Eaglecrest Golf Course lands. The proposed $8.5 million land purchase would bring approximately 105 acres of land into public ownership.
The proposal envisions 40% of the property being converted to forested parkland with trails and habitat restoration. The remaining land will be home to a nine hole golf course and carefully planned housing developments to help meet community needs. The acquisition will be funded through the sale of up to 10% of the land for housing with the TQB acting as the initial developer by subdividing the lands and establishing development guidelines in consultation with the community.
Short term costs will be covered by reallocating existing funds in the town's budget which would be subsequently replenished through land sales. Sale of existing town own land in the Eaglecrest neighbourhood will be considered as part of the financing strategy.
According to the media release, no development decisions have been made and no land will be transferred until public input is gathered and due diligence is complete. This is despite the release of a fairly detailed "proposed land use map". The town has until November 1st 2025 to finalize the purchase agreement if council chooses to proceed.
You can read more about the project and frequently asked questions on the newly created TQB Eaglecrest Golf Course project web page. The town has already selected a consultant (MODUS Planning) to lead the public consultation process which will begin in August 2025. Watch for opportunities to engage, become informed and voice your opinions.
